Virginia Man Survives Heart Attack After Crash

A man from Virginia recently endured a life-threatening heart attack behind the wheel, ironically right next to a cardiology office.

Jeff Jelach was coming home from his training class last month when things took a drastic turn. He suddenly stopped breathing, veered off course, hit a sign, and eventually ended up in a parking lot after crossing several lanes. It was, as reported, quite a shocking moment.

Jelach, 64, recalled, “I sat in the car because something didn’t feel right. I had a coffee and thought I’d just close my eyes for a bit.” It turns out he was experiencing a severe “widow maker” heart attack, which can be particularly fatal.

By sheer luck, he crashed near the office of Dr. Deepak Talreja, a leading cardiologist at Centera Health. Dr. Talreja was quick to respond to the scene after being alerted by 911.

Upon arriving, he described the scene to Jelach, noting, “All I saw was a shattered windshield and the airbag deployed. You were quite surrounded by airbags and glass.” It was a chaotic situation, but Talreja quickly assessed the gravity of Jelach’s condition.

“You weren’t breathing, and there was no pulse. It’s sudden cardiac death, which means your heart isn’t functioning. It’s a serious situation,” he explained.

Fortunately, they were able to get Jelach’s heart restarted rapidly. Without immediate medical intervention, he likely wouldn’t have survived—Dr. Talreja indicated that if they had waited beyond eight minutes, it could have been too late.

Jelach later shared the details of his heart condition: “My lower artery was 95% blocked, and the upper part was 90% blocked.” Quite alarming, really.

Waking up after the ordeal felt surreal. He vividly recalled the confusion and chaos around him, saying, “It was like a dream, blurred and hazy.” When he asked a nurse what had happened, the answer was stark: “You’re having a heart attack. You crashed your car.”

Despite a family history of heart issues—his father suffered two heart attacks, and his mother passed away from one—Jelach believed that staying active would keep such problems at bay. He’s been an athlete since his teens, often running marathons. “I thought, that sort of thing doesn’t happen to me,” he added, a little incredulously.

Now, back to work after the incident, he has shifted his focus to healthier eating habits. He summed up his experience by saying, “It’s a testament to God’s greatness and all that had to unfold to keep me alive. I feel blessed. It’s a miracle. I’m incredibly grateful to Dr. Talreja for being there.”
