Carlos Rodon's personal growth takes center stage with the Yankees' season at stake

Rodon Talks Stakes Ahead of Must-Win Game

Carlos Rodon is fully aware of the importance of the upcoming game. After the Yankees’ 3-1 defeat against the Red Sox, he remarked, “It’s a must-see game tomorrow. Just go outside and compete.” The Yankees, now facing a critical moment in the wildcard race, are looking to their left-handed pitcher, whose journey with the team has shown considerable growth.

This 2023 season has been a tumultuous ride, plagued by injuries and struggles on the mound. However, looking ahead to 2024, Rodon, who once heavily relied on his fastball and slider, diversified his repertoire with the addition of a cutter and increased use of his changeup. This adjustment has indicated that he could step up as a dependable starter for the Yankees. In this season, he’s introduced a sinker into his evolving five-pitch mix, proving his worth not only as a reliable pitcher but also as an all-star candidate with Cy Young recognition.

His character has also matured along with his pitching skills. Last year, Rodon faced challenges against the Royals, notably struggling in his Game 2 ALDS start, where he allowed four runs over four innings. Now, the Rodon that the fans and Yankees will see is a transformed version.

“I learned a lot simply by staying true to myself and keeping my emotions in check,” Rodon shared. “So, I hope we can carry that forward this year.”

Now, as he prepares to face Brejanbelo in the Bronx, the pressure is on to keep the Yankees’ hopes alive. Returning from last year’s postseason, Rodon has started two ALCs, showing growth against teams like the Royals and Dodgers, showcasing his revamped pitching mix.

Rodon has learned to manage the game at a different pace. He’s no longer consumed by pressure; striking out batters doesn’t drain him like it once did. “I had a lot of help with that,” he admitted.

Rodon isn’t just another player—he’s the Game 2 starter for October, seeking to redeem his past. With a history of a 3.81 ERA, he’s part of a team that has seen a range of postseason action. He and Yankees veteran Pettit share a thoughtful approach, particularly under pressure.

Reflecting on the past, Rodon noted, “These two, after that beginning, I found my heart where it needed to be.” His mindset and emotional control now seem steadier, a far cry from his previous outbursts.

The evolution of both his style and approach is evident as he gears up for a pivotal game in his career.

“There are things I can look back on, but tomorrow is tomorrow,” he mused. “That’s just the way it is, but it should be fun.”
