Russia is engaged in a conflict that threatens democracy and freedom, with potential scapegoating when issues arise—such as the recent mysterious drone flights that disrupted European airports, according to the German Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Friedrich Merz addressed journalists in Berlin, stating that Moscow is attempting to destabilize the European Union. He noted that while the two powers aren’t in an outright war, tensions are escalating. Earlier this year, Merz, a key conservative figure, opted to collaborate with the left rather than align with the far right regarding Europe-Russia relations.
“We are living in a completely different reality,” he remarked, pointing out that Russia is waging “a war against our democracy and our freedom.”
Referring to the uptick in drone activity in Northwest Europe, which he described as an example of hybrid warfare, Merz mentioned that authorities still struggle to trace their origin. Yet, the prevailing assumption is that these drones are linked to Russia.
Germany’s concerns have intensified as drone sightings forced the closure of several major airports due to collision risks, raising alarms among European leaders. In light of these events, proposals for a joint European drone defense initiative are floating around, and Merz is reportedly contemplating updates to German aviation security laws to empower the military to neutralize rogue drones if needed.
However, in densely populated regions of Northwest Europe, tackling this mystery is fraught with danger. “There’s a risk they could land in someone’s backyard, a kindergarten, or even a hospital,” Merz cautioned.
His remarks coincided with similar statements from Eliza Manningham Buller, the former head of the UK’s MI5. She asserted that it is accurate to declare, “We are already at war with Russia. It’s a different kind of conflict, but involves a spectrum of hostilities including cyberattacks, physical assaults, and intelligence operations.”
