Supreme Court Delays Trump’s Bid to Remove Federal Reserve Governor

The Supreme Court has decided to hold off on a major case involving the Federal Reserve and the Trump administration until next year. This postponement gives some leeway for the ongoing tensions surrounding Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook and the allegations that have arisen against her.

President Donald Trump sought the court’s intervention to dismiss Cook over accusations of mortgage fraud, which she has firmly denied. However, on Wednesday, the Supreme Court opted not to expedite the appeal, indicating that a full review of the case will occur in January.

Interestingly, the court didn’t clarify its reasoning nor did it note any dissenting opinions regarding this decision. In a related comment, Kush Desai, a spokesman for the White House, asserted, “President Trump legally removed Lisa Cook from the Federal Reserve for a cause,” expressing optimism for a favorable outcome following the upcoming arguments in January.

Cook faces accusations of providing false information on mortgage applications related to properties she owns in Michigan and Georgia. Importantly, she has not faced formal charges connected with these claims.

Bill Prute, the Director of the Federal Housing and Finance Agency, remarked on the matter back in August, emphasizing that mortgage fraud erodes public trust in the system, regardless of the individual’s status. He added that a criminal referral had been submitted to the Department of Justice concerning the allegations against Cook, urging that the DOJ should pursue the facts wherever they lead.

While the president does have the authority to dismiss members of the Federal Reserve for valid reasons, it’s noteworthy that this action has not been taken in the institution’s 112-year history.

On a related note, Trump has been publicly critical of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell for not reducing interest rates, with some observers suggesting that the pursuit of Cook is motivated by a desire to install a more favorable governor who would align with Trump’s economic views.

“I tried to be nice to the guy, but that hasn’t worked out. He’s a knucklehead. That’s just the truth,” Trump remarked about Powell earlier this year.

The ongoing conflict between Trump and Powell seemed to calm a bit when the Fed announced a 25 basis point interest rate cut, hinting at potential future reductions. Notably, Cook made history as the first Black woman to serve as a governor on the Federal Reserve board.
