Vance Blames Schumer for Government Shutdown
On Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance pointed fingers at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for the ongoing government shutdown. Schumer has reportedly been influenced by far-left members of the Democratic Party, particularly worrying about a significant challenge from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent figure from New York.
In a briefing at the White House, Vance highlighted that there were “many different answers” being discussed as to why the Democrats were instigating the shutdown, but he insisted that they needed to confront the reality of the situation. “Let’s be honest,” Vance stated. “Chuck Schumer is facing a major challenge from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The government is shutting down because he’s afraid of these radical elements within his party.”
Vance further mentioned that if the shutdown persisted, the Democratic factions would be held accountable for the consequences. He emphasized that because of Schumer’s decisions, military personnel had not been compensated, and many low-income Americans were at risk of losing essential food aid.
“Thanks to Chuck Schumer and his party’s decisions, our troops are unpaid right now,” Vance remarked. “We have people in need of food assistance, and they won’t receive it unless government functions are restored. There’s flood insurance to consider, especially with hurricane season affecting areas in the Southeast.”
Vance called for lawmakers to reopen the government, explaining that the partial shutdown began after a late-night fundraising deadline could not be met due to disagreements over the funding bill between Democrats and Republicans. He noted that Democrats were also pushing to reinstitute federal funding for emergency medical care for undocumented immigrants that had ended during the Trump administration.
Continuing with his criticisms, Vance urged collaboration among Democrats and Senate Republicans to resolve the situation peacefully. “Let’s join Chuck Schumer and moderate Democrats, along with 52 Senate Republicans, and do what’s right. Open up the people’s government, and then we can address health policies for Americans,” he said.
After Vance’s comments, a White House spokesperson addressed the ongoing issues, mentioning that Schumer may not have anticipated the dissent from moderate Democrats during the recent negotiations. The spokesperson also encouraged Democrats to find the courage to vote for a resolution that would ensure government funding continuity.
