Trump’s Sombrero Meme Sparks Controversy

Vice President JD Vance remarked that President Donald Trump was upset with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, particularly regarding a meme featuring a sombrero, which Jeffries claimed was racist.

“I think it’s amusing,” Vance stated on Wednesday. While discussing potential collaboration with Democrats on a government funding plan, he was asked if the sombrero meme might be beneficial. “We can enjoy some of the president’s humor while still negotiating sincerely, poking fun at the absurdities of the Democrats’ stance.”

Vance then made a somewhat humorous pledge to Jeffries: “Tell him this—I assure you, if you help us get the government back on track, the sombrero memes will come to a halt.”

Amid the rising tensions, Democrats, along with media outlets, labeled the meme as “racist.”

Vance attended a Wednesday press briefing concerning the government shutdown that had started earlier that day due to a failure between Democratic and Republican lawmakers to secure a funding agreement. The administration is pushing forward with initiatives aimed at providing healthcare for undocumented immigrants, an effort complicated by Democratic opposition.

The meme in question, featuring Jeffries wearing a sombrero and set to Mariachi music, was shared by Trump and also included Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Some voices in the video suggested Schumer was a typical Democrat supporter given their recent positions on immigration.

Jeffries responded, saying, “Mr. President, if you have anything to say about me, please refrain from using these racist AI-generated videos.” He challenged Trump to speak face-to-face when he’s next in the Oval Office.

As for Vance, he emphasized the media’s need to clarify that the video was, indeed, AI-generated, and pointed out the comedic elements in the portrayal. “He called it racist—I’m not exactly sure what that implies,” Vance remarked.

On another note, when asked about a different AI-generated video featuring a futuristic “medbed” that Trump had shared and later deleted, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt acknowledged that Trump enjoys sharing memes and videos he comes across on social media.
