Xavien Howard Retires from NFL

Xavien Howard, a cornerback for the Indianapolis Colts, announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday after facing challenges during the first four games of the season.

Following practice, team representatives confirmed that Howard was placed on the preliminary/retired list. In response, the Colts signed safety Trey Washington to complete their 53-player roster.

On Instagram, Howard shared his thoughts. He expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had, stating, “Throughout my career, I’ve always played football for the love of sports. I enjoyed everything that comes with being part of the NFL. My passion for the game drove me.” He thanked the Miami Dolphins for drafting him and acknowledged the Colts for their support in sustaining his dreams. However, he noted, “My dreams have changed.”

He mentioned his faith, saying he asked God for guidance in his path, firmly believing that everything happens for a reason. He emphasized that caring for his children is now his priority, as he feels his “purposes are fulfilled in this sport.”

At 32 years old, Howard joined the Colts after missing the entire 2024 season. He previously spent eight seasons with the Dolphins, accumulating 11 tackles and a fumble recovery in the first four games.

Despite eagerness to succeed, Howard faced difficulties early in the season. After a Week 2 match against the Denver Broncos, he acknowledged the team’s attempts to challenge him, saying, “I was going little by little, still looking forward to seeing if I could still play.” He was determined to improve his techniques.

In a game against the Los Angeles Rams, Howard was part of a secondary that allowed an 88-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tutu Atwell. Meanwhile, Puka Nakua had a standout performance with 13 catches for 170 yards and a touchdown.

Reflecting on his career, Howard highlighted his best season in 2020 when he earned his second Pro Bowl selection, recording 10 interceptions in 16 games. Over his career, he racked up 29 interceptions, 342 tackles, and 95 pass breakups.
