Ex-Obama advisor criticizes Democrats for neglecting education issues

Rahm Emmanuel Calls for Democrats to Reconnect with Education Basics

This week, Rahm Emmanuel took aim at his own party, urging Democrats to refocus on fundamental education issues in order to rebuild trust with parents. He expressed concern that while discussions around pronouns have been rampant over the past five years, many students still struggle to identify what a pronoun actually is.

Emmanuel, who previously served as the mayor of Chicago and is now a U.S. ambassador to Japan, pointed out in a recent op-ed that the focus has shifted: “We’ve paid more attention to whether schools are named after historical figures than to understanding why students should feel pride in being Americans. Excellence in the classroom seems to have been ignored,” he wrote.

He emphasized that it’s critical for the party to return to the basics, especially regarding how they approach high school reforms. Emmanuel believes that the Democrats have lost their edge in the educational arena, warning that a return to fundamental principles is necessary to regain their footing.

Furthermore, he highlighted worsening scores in reading and math, corroborated by a report card released in September. Emmanuel also touched on the complications that arose from the party’s decision to keep schools closed during the Covid-19 pandemic. He noted that this choice has seriously undermined the party’s standing, turning previous advantages in education into a disadvantage as families expressed frustration.

He mentioned, “It’s a part of us [Democrats] that made a grave error by not reopening schools when clear evidence indicated it was safe to do so. While Washington may be out of touch, parents and teachers are acutely aware of the situation.”

In a more biting comment, he referenced that the Democrats’ popularity has dipped even below figures like Elon Musk, suggesting a troubling shift in public perception.

Emmanuel remarked on the clear messages sent to families regarding leadership during long school closures, contrasting that with some southern states, particularly Mississippi, which have shown notable improvements in educational rankings. He noted how Mississippi transformed its approach, moving from 49th place in 2013 to a much better ranking, focusing on methods that prioritize phonics over ambiguous reading strategies.

Looking forward, he called for collaboration to enhance education across the board. He shared his own initiatives from his time as mayor, like requiring high school graduates to secure acceptance letters from colleges or trade programs, tying educational success directly to community engagement.

“These reforms should become the core of the Democratic education agenda moving forward. They have the potential to yield tangible results and resonate with parents,” he stated.

Emmanuel concluded by illustrating the importance of addressing the real concerns families have, stating that conversations at the family table extend beyond bills and delve into what children are learning, the friendships they form, and the influences of social media. It’s all part of a broader narrative that Democrats need to engage with thoughtfully.
