Fake Real Estate Broker Scams NYC Tenant Out of $25,000

A man posing as a real estate broker in New York City is accused of stealing $25,000 from a tenant. According to prosecutors, Juan Valoy, 46, was unauthorized to show or lease the property he claimed to represent.

Valoy utilized Facebook Marketplace and referrals to target unsuspecting renters. District Attorney Bragg noted, “Valoy exploited people looking for stable housing during a time when affordable options are extremely limited. He essentially took money from families, leaving one mother with a homeless child.”

Operating across various neighborhoods, including Washington Heights, Queens, and the Bronx, Valoy arranged property tours but had no legitimate claim to the apartments listed. He often charged victims, who were mainly Hispanic New Yorkers, over $7,000 in cashier’s checks made payable to a business he registered called Milian Services Corporation.

Valoy reportedly pocketed the cash and delayed move-in dates with a series of excuses about necessary repairs or pest control, before ultimately cutting off communication with the victim.

The mother of one victim had relocated, believing that her move to a new apartment had been confirmed by Valoy.

Prosecutors allege that Valoy collected sensitive information from victims, including financial documents and Social Security numbers.

He has pleaded not guilty to charges of grand theft and fraud. Justice Anne Scherzer of the Manhattan Supreme Court set his bail at $25,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 11.
