Harvard University Appoints New Professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies
Harvard University is set to welcome a new professor of gender and sexuality, Professor Kareem Khubchandani, who may also be known as “Lawhore Vagistan,” a drag queen. This appointment is part of a visiting faculty program, and Khubchandani will serve in this role from 2025 to 2026.
According to a recent press release from Harvard, Khubchandani joins from Tufts University. He seems to have a lively presence on social media, particularly on Instagram where he uses the handle @lawhorevagistan.
Interestingly, Khubchandani has made a name for himself in the academic world as well as in performance art. For instance, he was noted for his appearance at Georgetown University where he performed and lectured about the intersection of drag and culture. This performance was part of a South Asian Speakers Series and reportedly garnered a lot of attention.
Harvard’s announcement highlights Khubchandani’s prior works, including books such as “Decolonize Drag” and “Ishtyle: Gay Indian Nightlife Accent.” He’s set to teach two courses that explore themes of ethnography and the dynamics of drag culture during the upcoming fall and spring semesters.
It’s worth noting that Khubchandani’s academic background is impressive; he holds a PhD in Performance Studies from Northwestern University. He’s also preparing to release a new book titled “Drug Lessons: A Queer Manual for Academics, Artists and Aunts” this October.
Harvard University and Khubchandani were contacted for comments regarding this engagement and his work in gender and sexuality studies.
