Is Taylor Swift's 'Ruin the Friendship' written about Blake Lively?

Taylor Swift’s latest album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” has sparked curiosity, especially with track No. 6, “Ruin the Friendship.” Many fans speculate it could be about Blake Lively.

After listening to the track, the speculation does seem plausible.

“Ruin the Friendship” narrates the story of Swift’s younger self falling for a boy already in a relationship.

Yet, it seems her feelings aren’t returned when she sings, “Your smile, Miles Wide/And it wasn’t an invitation/I should have kissed you anyway.”

Swift, 35, even touches on the complications of such a situation. She implies that if feelings were mutual, things might have gotten messy.

“And that wasn’t convenient, no / But your girlfriend was away / I should have kissed you anyway,” she reflects, along with lyrics hinting at the awkwardness of crossing boundaries.

She acknowledges the complexities of maintaining friendships, particularly with the boy’s ex, suggesting they’ve been getting along lately. The repeated line, “It’s safe to make friends / doesn’t mean you should,” emphasizes this.

Recently, rumors around Lively have resurfaced. As Swift’s album rolled out, theories related to the narrative of “The Life of a Showgirl” began circling, especially regarding Justin Baldoni, a co-star in “It Ending Us.”

Baldoni’s legal team called upon Swift during a countersuit claiming that Lively had leveraged her friendship to gain an edge in a deal. These allegations created tensions, leaving a mark on Swift and Lively’s relationship.

A source hinted that Swift is upset with Lively for attempting to use her for influence in that situation, suggesting an underlying frustration that has yet to heal between them.

Concerns around Baldoni’s behavior—specifically allegations of harassment—have further complicated things.

While Swift and Lively seem to have drifted apart, there’s lingering uncertainty about whether Lively has reached out following Swift’s recent engagement to Travis Kelce.

There’s a deeper layer to “Ruin the Friendship,” with some fans even speculating it might reference Nathan Johnson, a high school classmate who tragically passed away in an accident in 2006.

Swift reminisces about a time when she was forced to return home after his death, expressing regret in the song about not having acted on her feelings.

In her words, “When I left school, I lost your truck / Abigail called me with bad news / Goodbye… and we don’t know why / It wasn’t an invitation / But I wasn’t flying home anyway.”

It’s worth noting that while Johnson and Swift did not attend the same high school, they shared a connection due to their rivalry in sports.

Moreover, Johnson also had musical talent, paralleling Swift’s own passions as both aspired to make it in the industry.

While the true subject of the song remains ambiguous, it speaks to the bittersweet nature of lost opportunities and friendships, making “Ruin the Friendship” a heartfelt exploration of unresolved feelings.

“The Life of a Showgirl” is available now for streaming.
