X-Journalist Encounters Legal Trouble in Portland
Nick Thorto, a former journalist, found himself facing off against federal agents at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility on Thursday night. The scene was chaotic, with Thorto capturing footage of the protests surrounding him.
In the video, he can be seen with what remains of a burning American flag, reportedly taken from an Antifa group. As he moved through the crowd, things escalated. Thorto later recounted missing a critical moment but ended up being apprehended and taken into custody by the Portland police.
“I was really surprised to find myself arrested,” he said, describing the moment he ended up behind a police cruiser as officers processed the situation. I mean, it’s just strange, right? I even asked him about the other female protesters who were also arrested with him.
Thorto is now facing charges for disorderly conduct and spent the night in jail, but he was released early the following morning.
In reaction to his arrest, he took to social media, expressing his intent to fight the case. He mentioned calling in lawyers and anticipates a lengthy legal battle. “I’m sure this isn’t the end of it,” he stated.
Thorto further claimed that U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy had committed to looking into the circumstances surrounding his arrest. According to him, she reached out personally to assure him an investigation would be launched, which adds an interesting twist to the story.
Meanwhile, tensions have flared significantly between conservatives and the Trump administration following this incident. Just a few days prior, another journalist, Katie Davis, reported being assaulted by an Antifa member, leaving her with injuries from a flagpole incident. Davis attempted to alert the police to apprehend the attacker, but the officer present allowed them to walk free.
In light of these events, Tricia McLaughlin, a civil servant at the Department of Homeland Security, indicated that there would be a governmental response to the violence against reporters. “This kind of behavior won’t continue under [President] Trump,” she remarked.
