Old Grudges: Derek Jeter and David Samson’s Tension Resurfaces

The past isn’t really the past for Derek Jeter and David Samson.

Samson, the former Marlins executive, has been openly critical of Jeter since his brief time as the owner and CEO of the Miami franchise. Recently, this tension bubbled over during the Hall of Fame weekend in July.

The two ran into each other in Cooperstown, with Samson there for a baseball event, and it didn’t take long for old feelings to come to the surface.

Samson shared his experience on a podcast, recalling, “I haven’t seen him since the deal. I approached him in Cooperstown with my son, reaching out to say, ‘I’m happy to see you.’ He looked at me and remarked, ‘Oh, you brought your camera crew, I’m sure.’ I had to clarify that it was just my son. At that point, my son stood there, eyes wide open, and Jeter started expressing his frustrations.”

Samson continued, “I told him, ‘Derek, I’m living rent-free in your head. Thanks for tuning into our show every day.’ He seemed to listen but then began to leave, throwing some negative comments my way.”

The tension between them is rooted in the past. Samson was the president of the Marlins in 2017 when Jeter, along with Bruce Sherman, acquired the team and swiftly ousted him. Jeter held a leadership role for five years before stepping down in 2022.

Samson didn’t hold back during his conversation, saying, “Derek Jeter has problems. That’s just the truth. He has suitability issues, and aside from playing shortstop, he seems to struggle with everything else.”

At the time of publication, no comments had been received from Jeter’s side regarding these remarks.
