Chicago – Federal authorities shot at a woman allegedly armed with a gun on Saturday afternoon after a chaotic encounter involving multiple vehicles in the city.
The incident took place near West 39th and South Kezzy Avenue in Brighton Park, according to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official.
Reportedly, Border Patrol agents were conducting routine patrols when they were surrounded by a group of ten vehicles. When the agents attempted to leave the area, they claimed the woman tried to run them over, prompting one of the agents to discharge their weapon.
DHS Deputy Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that the woman involved was allegedly armed with “semi-automatic weapons.” She noted, “One of the drivers involved was armed, which led to law enforcement needing to take defensive action.” Fortunately, no one was injured during this confrontation.
Additionally, McLaughlin mentioned that the woman had recently been highlighted in a CBP Intelligence Breaking News alert for allegedly doxxing agents, which has added to the scrutiny surrounding immigration enforcement actions in the area.
McLaughlin emphasized the humanity of law enforcement officers, explaining, “They are fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters. They aim to keep the community safe each day.”
Sources informed Nexstar’s WGN that the woman sustained multiple gunshot wounds and is in critical condition at a hospital.
While the Chicago Police Department received initial calls regarding the shooting, they did not participate in the incident or its investigation. However, they did respond to the scene to ensure safety, document the event, and manage traffic in the area.
This incident is part of broader tensions related to an immigration enforcement initiative dubbed “Operation Midway Blitz,” which has faced significant backlash from community members and local leaders. Despite the ongoing protests, over 900 arrests have reportedly been made since the operation’s commencement.
