During a weekend game against Kent State, Oklahoma wide receiver Kent Lewis suffered a frightening injury when he collided with a brick wall while attempting to catch a touchdown pass.
After the ball was deflected, Lewis sprinted at full speed towards the wall to recover it.
The brick walls are positioned quite close to the field, lining much of Owen Field.
Following the impact, Lewis lay on the ground for several minutes before being helped off the field.
His teammates gathered around him in support.
According to the Sooner Sports Network, Lewis had a negative X-ray result and was seen walking around the locker room by halftime.
The full extent of his injury is still unclear.
This season marks Lewis’ first with Oklahoma after transferring from Southern Illinois earlier this year.
He has quickly become one of the team’s key receivers, racking up 210 yards and two touchdowns across 17 receptions so far this season.
Before joining Oklahoma, Lewis began his college career at UCLA, then played for Wisconsin for two years, and moved to Southern Illinois last year.
He reportedly impressed during training camp, which is how he secured his role. Oklahoma quarterback John Mathews noted that Lewis showed a genuine “passion for the game.”
“He definitely has a lot of spirit and passion for football. He loves to win and is always focused on helping the team,” Mathews spoke highly of him during camp. “He’ll just keep getting better.”
