Federal Judge Halts National Guard Deployment in Portland

A federal judge in Oregon has temporarily halted the Trump administration’s initiative to send hundreds of National Guard troops to Portland, a city that has experienced over 100 days of significant protests against immigration policies.

US District Judge Karin Imargat, nominated by Trump, issued a ruling on Saturday stating that the proposed use of active-duty military for what was described as a “war-torn” Oregon city violates the US Constitution.

In her decision, she highlighted the importance of maintaining the balance of power among government branches and the relationship between military and domestic law enforcement. “The essence of living under the rule of law in the United States hinges on adhering to what the Constitution demands regarding these dynamics,” she remarked.

This temporary restraining order is set to expire in two weeks.

Recently, Trump had announced plans to deploy 200 National Security Forces to Portland to assist immigration authorities and combat what he referred to as “domestic terrorists,” indicating a willingness to use “full force if necessary.”

In response, state officials quickly urged for a halt to the deployment of troops already sent to various democratically operated cities such as Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Memphis.

On Friday, Trump directed his administration to explore potential federal funding cuts targeting Portland.

“I’ve just spoken with the president, and he has tasked his team to look into the aid that could be scaled back in Portland,” explained White House spokesperson Carolina Leavitt during an unusual briefing that day.

Trump further stated, “We don’t fund states that allow disorder. There will soon be a surge in federal resources to Portland. Law and order will prevail, and the president will reaffirm that.”

Since June, protests have surged in South Portland, with some unidentified groups targeting ICE detention centers and clashing violently with federal agents. Federal immigration officials indicate that the facility has suffered ongoing disruptions for over 100 days, with minimal support from local law enforcement.

Additionally, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy has initiated an investigation into the Portland Police Department after an incident involving the arrest of a Conservative reporter named Nick Thorto amidst the unrest.
