Trump Calls for Arab Nations to Join Abraham Accords Amid Iran Deal Discussions
President Trump announced early Monday that he has instructed leaders from various Arab nations and other Middle Eastern allies to join the Abraham Accords if they wish to be involved in the Iran nuclear deal. He stated that this deal is “on track.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump mentioned that during a Saturday phone call, he urged leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Pakistan, Turkey, Jordan, and Bahrain to normalize relations with Israel, as outlined in the U.S.-brokered agreement from 2020.
“I expressed that after all the efforts the U.S. has made to piece together this complex puzzle, it should be necessary for these countries to sign the Abraham Accords simultaneously,” Trump said.
His comments, made during a conference call with these leaders, have been widely circulated. Notably, the UAE and Bahrain have already joined the Abraham Accords, both firmly against Iran.
“I understand one or two leaders might have reasons to hesitate, which is fine, but most are ready to make this diplomatic thaw with Iran a historic event,” he added, noting that there are strong pressures for this to happen.
“If they don’t agree, then they shouldn’t be part of this deal, as that would show bad faith,” he pointed out.
In a surprising turn, Trump suggested that Iran might consider joining the Abraham Accords, which would mark a significant shift given the long-standing hostilities between Iran and Israel.
“I have spoken with many respected leaders who would be honored to include Iran in the Abraham Accords once our agreement is signed. That would truly be something special!” Trump stated in his post.
“If Iran reaches an agreement with me, as the President, it would be a privilege for them to become part of this unique coalition,” he continued.
However, it remains uncertain if Israel would endorse Iran’s inclusion in the pact.
Throughout his presidency, Trump has sought to encourage Saudi Arabia to recognize Israel, reportedly having tense discussions with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud about it.
Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern nations have maintained that resolving the Palestinian issue is a prerequisite for fully normalizing relations with Israel.
Before the October 7 attack on Hamas, the Saudi crown prince had repeatedly indicated a willingness to move toward normalization, while the Biden administration also aimed for a breakthrough in these discussions.
Nonetheless, the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict has complicated matters, heightening tensions between Arab nations and Israel.
The Abraham Accords, which led the UAE and Bahrain to normalize relations with Israel, are widely regarded as one of Trump’s notable foreign policy successes. Additionally, Morocco and Sudan later joined this agreement.
The Trump administration is currently working on a “broad template” for a peace plan with Iran, with insiders claiming the deal is nearly complete but still days away from being finalized.
As rumors grew over the weekend that a deal with Iran could be imminent, Trump publicly mentioned that he had advised his team “not to rush” the negotiations.
“Negotiations with Iran are making good progress! It’s important for everyone that we reach a meaningful agreement; otherwise, we could face escalating conflicts, which nobody wants!” Trump concluded in his Truth Social post.
