Stardust Racers at Universal’s Epic Universe reopens two weeks following a man's death from blunt force injuries.

On Saturday afternoon, Florida’s thrilling roller coaster, Stardust Racer, reopened after being shut down for more than two weeks. This closure followed the tragic death of Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, who sustained multiple blunt force injuries while riding with his girlfriend.

The coaster, which previously had long wait times, saw a nearly three-hour queue upon its return. It had been closed since September 17, when it was found not to respond properly in the front seat of the dual roller coaster.

Before reopening, Orlando theme parks implemented new procedures and signage aimed at enhancing safety warnings and eligibility guidelines for thrill rides and attractions.

An examination confirmed that the Stardust Racer was functioning correctly at the time of Zavala’s fatal incident. The coaster propels riders at speeds of up to 62 mph and reaches heights of 133 feet.

Zavala, who had spinal cord atrophy and used a wheelchair, tragically suffered multiple injuries after being thrown from a recreational vehicle, according to medical examiners. Witnesses described the distressing moment he fell, leaving his family devastated.

Florida news outlets reported that the family believes Universal Orlando overlooked several safety concerns and criticized park staff for their lack of emergency preparedness during the incident.

Investigators found that Zavala had serious head injuries and lacerations during the ride, and he was likely unconscious for much of the event. In contrast, park officials maintained that the ride was operating normally and that staff followed established protocols.

A thorough review by park authorities, ride manufacturers, and external experts reportedly supports Universal’s assertion that the coasters were functioning as intended at the time of the incident.
