Issue: President Randy Weingarten’s Critique of Miranda Devine’s Politics

President of the American Federation of Teachers, Randy Weingarten, has received criticism for her left-leaning views (“Randy places left-handed politics on children,” Miranda Devine, October 2).

There’s widespread frustration that she leads public education in the U.S. Her focus during the pandemic seemed primarily on the needs of teachers rather than on students, which raises questions about her priorities.

It seems puzzling that the American Federation of Teachers hasn’t established a branch dedicated to addressing the declining scores in subjects like math and reading for students. Each year, these scores appear to worsen, yet it seems politicians are largely ignoring the issue.

After all, student achievement can be reflective of how well teachers are performing.

There’s a disturbing comparison being made, likening the treatment of teachers to the brutality faced during the Holocaust. As the child of a Holocaust survivor, I find this analogy deeply troubling.

Randy, did you ever fear persecution for holding different beliefs? The real suffering seems to be in how you manage the teachers’ union, which leaves students in poorly performing schools.

Miranda Devine has shed light on what she sees as failures in Weingarten’s leadership, particularly concerning the dire state of schools in urban areas. Despite poor student performance, she appears resistant to the Trump administration’s proposals for increasing charter schools.

Interestingly, schools that operate without unions often yield better academic results. So one has to wonder—what does Weingarten’s leadership really mean for the students?

Issue: Allegations of Misconduct and Nepotism at the US Naval Academy Involving Rep. Mikie Cheryl

Mikie Cheryl, a Democratic candidate for governor in New Jersey, has been put in the spotlight due to questions about her integrity in light of a misconduct scandal at the Naval Academy (“Mikie’s Naval Conference,” September 30).

Cheryl has been criticized for not reporting her fellow cadets during this scandal, which raises doubts about her moral character.

It seems hard to believe that her family’s connection to the Academy wouldn’t impact the situation.

Moreover, there are allegations regarding her husband’s involvement in scandals tied to the Academy as well.

New Jersey voters might want to consider whether this is someone they can trust to govern.

Some have labeled Mikie Cheryl as insincere, accusing her of using her position for personal gain.

She claims she was barred from participating in an Academy ceremony due to the scandal involving her peers. Why, then, is she avoiding transparency by not revealing documents related to the investigation?

Her spokesperson called the accusations “sick and desperate,” claiming that her opposition is resorting to standard political tactics of denial and deflection.
