Thune Discusses Bipartisan Talks Amid Shutdown Concerns

During a recent interview, Senate Majority Leader John Thune highlighted that some Democrats are seeking a way to avoid future government shutdowns. When asked about additional lawmakers who could help reopen the government, he acknowledged ongoing discussions with Democrats who seem to recognize the downsides of their current strategy.

Thune explained on “Sunday Morning Futures” that he is reaching out to Republicans in hopes of finding an “off-ramp” from the impasse. He mentioned that South Dakota Republicans have communicated with Democrats but pointed out that leadership feels “stuck” due to pressure from left-leaning interest groups.

Democrats Under Pressure to Shift Their Stance

Thune described the Democratic group’s persistence in opposing President Trump as almost “disease-like,” indicating a reluctance to give him any kind of success. Still, he remarked that reopening the government shouldn’t be seen as a triumph for Trump; rather, it’s about funding the government for the next several weeks to ensure the budget process continues without disruption.

He criticized the current Democratic approach, suggesting it’s ingrained in a kind of stubbornness. There are reasonable voices among them, yet Thune believes they’re being overshadowed by more extreme elements within the party.

With the Senate’s failure to reach an agreement, the so-called “Shoomer Shutdown” entered its fifth day. Thune noted that the choice before Democrats now is quite stark—work towards government funding or face further complications.

The Senate is expected to reconvene for another vote on government funding soon.
