Texas Republican Senate Primary Heats Up
The race for Texas’ US Senate seat is becoming increasingly competitive, particularly within the Republican Party.
On Monday, Texas Representative Wesley Hunt announced his candidacy for the Senate seat previously held by Senator John Cornyn. Cornyn has been campaigning against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who entered the Senate race back in April.
The Republican primary was already anticipated to be contentious, with Paxton having a slight advantage. Hunt’s entry into the race, however, adds a new layer of complexity.
In addressing his campaign launch, Hunt stated, “For faith. For family. For freedom. For Texas. I am Wesley Hunt, and I run for the Senate.”
Hunt’s announcement has stirred some controversy, with concerns that the National Republican Senate Committee may be prioritizing “personal ambitions” over maintaining a slim Republican majority in the House.
“John Cornyn is a battle-tested conservative and a steadfast leader of Trump’s agenda in the Senate,” said a spokesperson. “Now that Wesley has opted for his own ambitions, we’ll be scrutinizing his records closely.”
Recent polls indicate that Hunt’s participation could diminish Cornyn’s chances for re-election. In a two-candidate race between Cornyn and Paxton, the average polling suggests Cornyn is trailing by about 2.3 points. Introducing Hunt into the mix raises that margin to approximately four points.
Despite Hunt’s past support for both Paxton and Cornyn, his campaign could potentially siphon votes from Cornyn and strengthen Paxton’s position as the frontrunner.
