Israeli-Hamas War: Sumud Flotilla Encounter

In the recent conflict involving Israel and Hamas, the world’s Sumud Flotilla, comprising over 40 ships, faced an unexpected halt while attempting to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip. This fleet met with Israeli forces, resulting in more than a third of its members being deported to various European nations.

The Sumud Flotilla, with 42 ships and around 450 participants, set sail from Europe over a month ago. They approached Gaza last weekend, where Israeli forces arrested the vessel.

“Greta Samberg and the other 170 members of the fleet were deported after a brief detention over the weekend,” reports indicated.

The group included several journalists and notable figures, such as European lawmakers and Nelson Mandela’s grandson, alongside the young climate activist Greta Samberg.

On Monday, multiple sources reported that Thunberg and the other activists had been deported following their short detention. Although Israeli officials denied these allegations, many returning activists shared stories of mistreatment they experienced at the hands of Israeli forces.

Interestingly, an Italian journalist, Saverio Tonmar, recounted how they observed Samberg being treated poorly, even recalling how they tied her hands, mocking her by placing an Israeli flag next to her.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed these claims, labeling them as “ridiculous” and asserting that Samberg never lodged any complaints, suggesting that the incidents never occurred.

Video footage capturing Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir circulated widely. It allegedly shows him taunting the captured activists, branding them as “terrorists.”

The flotilla aimed to challenge what they termed the “illegal” Israeli blockade of Gaza, which has been in effect since Hamas took control of the area in June 2007.

According to a press release from the Global Sumud Flotilla, their mission, launched on August 10, 2025, was to provide “medical supplies, nutritional aid, and crew solidarity.”

Reports suggest that negotiators for a newly mediated ceasefire between Israel and Hamas may arrive in Cairo soon.

Despite attempts to reach out for comments from the Global Sumud Flotilla, no responses have been received.
