Portland Protests Escalate as Federal Agents Deploy Tear Gas
In Portland, tensions remain high following dramatic scenes captured on video late Sunday, showing federal agents engaged in arrests and deploying tear gas against protesters.
The footage reveals multiple federal officials, marked by Homeland Security and U.S. Border Patrol insignias, detaining demonstrators amid thick clouds of gas.
On Monday, the Pentagon confirmed that while members of the Oregon National Guard are in “T10 status,” they are not currently active in the Portland vicinity.
A spokesperson for the White House indicated that President Donald Trump has initiated a federal lawsuit aimed at addressing what the administration terms “violent riots” in the city. The hope is that the Supreme Court will reverse a restraining order that currently limits the addition of troops.
Federal Judge Blocks Trump’s National Guard Plans
According to a statement from a spokeswoman, “The facts have not changed. President Trump utilized his legal authority to safeguard federal properties and personnel in Portland amid ongoing riots.” There’s an expectation for the situation to be validated by the High Court.
Protests Intensify Amid Federal Presence
Video footage shows over 100 protesters gathered outside a building, chanting and challenging lines of armed federal officers. Some individuals were forcibly detained, with agents seen carrying protesters away. In another instance, demonstrators were tackled and pinned down.
Repeated shouts from the crowd directed at the authorities included demands to “stop moving forward.” In a tense moment, one protester attempted to kick a gas canister towards officers before being subdued. It was noticeable that some demonstrators were wearing gas masks during the chaos.
Federal agents eventually withdrew to a nearby building as the crowd moved closer, cheering and chanting as they advanced.
The situation escalated further when U.S. District Judge Karin Imargat issued a temporary restraining order on Sunday, blocking Trump’s efforts to send California National Guard troops to Portland, deeming the lawsuit illegal and unconstitutional. This order also prohibits the deployment of National Guard units from other states within Oregon.
