Senator Greene Calls for English to be Made Official Language Amid Super Bowl Controversy
On Monday, Senator Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) urged Congress to establish English as the official language of the United States as a response to the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show featuring Bad Bunny in February.
“Bad Bunny says America will have four months to learn Spanish before his unnecessary performance at the Super Bowl halftime,” Greene stated, referencing her thoughts in a post on social media platform X.
She added, “This would be the perfect time to pass my bill making English the official language of America. Plus, the NFL should reconsider hosting these demonic, sexual performances at halftime.”
The decision to have Puerto Rican pop star Bad Bunny perform has ignited significant backlash from conservative circles and Trump supporters.
Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, has been vocal against President Trump. He expressed concerns about touring the US mainland, fearing that his fans could face repercussions from federal immigration enforcement.
During the Trump administration, threats were made to deploy immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) officers to the Super Bowl in California, with several MAGA figures criticizing Bad Bunny’s political stance.
While serving as a guest host for “Saturday Night Live” last weekend, Bad Bunny expressed his excitement about headlining the Super Bowl LX, remarking that “even Fox News is happy.” However, he did not address the potential ICE presence at the Super Bowl.
At one point during the SNL monologue, he spoke to the audience in Spanish, expressing gratitude to Latinos around the world and acknowledging those who “worked to open the door,” as per an online translation. He emphasized, “No one can erase or take away our mark and our contribution to this country.”
In a light-hearted moment, he added in English, “If you don’t understand what I just said, you have four months to learn.”
