Chicago Mayor Announces 'ICE-Free' Areas Amid Trump Administration's Crackdown on Sanctuary Cities

Chicago’s Sanctuary Policy Strengthens Amid Immigration Crackdown

Chicago’s Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson is intensifying his administration’s sanctuary policies, particularly in response to the city’s ongoing challenges with illegal immigration.

On Monday, Johnson issued an executive order that designates Chicago as an “ICE Free Zone.” This move prevents Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal immigration officials from accessing city-owned properties. Johnson’s office emphasizes the importance of this measure, especially given the federal administration’s intensified efforts to enforce immigration laws within the city.

“We cannot allow ICE agents to infringe upon the constitutional rights of our residents,” Johnson stated. He further noted that this executive order represents Chicago’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of its immigrant communities while supporting democratic ideals.

The order specifically identifies city properties that are prohibited from being used for enforcing federal immigration policies. It also permits private entities to declare their properties as “ICE-less” zones and offers complimentary signage to help with this designation.

For years now, Chicago has maintained its status as a sanctuary jurisdiction. Notably, in January 2021, the city reinforced its welcoming city ordinance, significantly reducing cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.

This latest sanctuary order follows Johnson’s earlier initiative called “Chicago Protection,” signed in late August. That initiative aimed to utilize legal measures against immigration enforcement or the deployment of National Guard troops in the city. Additionally, in September, he implemented a “right to protest” order that directs the Chicago Police Department to collaborate with local activists to uphold First Amendment rights, despite potential federal interference.

Johnson’s wave of executive actions began in early September and correlates with Operation Midway Blitz, a crackdown by ICE agents in Illinois. There has been notable backlash from activists and local Democrats against the uptick in enforcement, resulting in heated protests and confrontations between demonstrators and enforcement officers.

Recently, tensions escalated dramatically when Border Patrol agents clashed with anti-ICE protesters in Chicago’s suburbs. Amid the chaos, Border Patrol tried to manage the situation, but the Chicago police were reportedly told not to assist, creating a volatile scenario.

“Fortunately, no law enforcement officers sustained serious injuries,” remarked Tricia McLaughlin, deputy secretary for homeland security, following the disturbance. “However, the Chicago Police Department’s lack of response has been concerning.”

Meanwhile, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raul has initiated legal action to challenge the Trump administration’s plans to deploy National Guard troops into states, signaling ongoing tensions in the state’s political landscape.
