Decline in Viewership for “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Following Controversy

It seems that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” is facing some serious challenges lately. After a backlash against the host’s remarks related to Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin, Disney decided to pause the show for a bit. When Kimmel returned on September 23rd, it was highly publicized, but the audience numbers turned out to be quite disappointing.

On October 2nd, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” attracted about 1.9 million viewers—down to 71% from what they had expected right after Kimmel’s suspension. This was particularly significant among the key demographic of adults aged 25-54, where the show managed to pull in only 265,000 viewers. This represents a sharp decline of 85% from the 1.7 million viewers who tuned in just weeks prior.

This latest dip is notable, as it brings Kimmel’s audience back to where things were before he had taken some time away. Interestingly enough, before Disney’s decision to take a breather with the show, Kimmel had been averaging around 1.6 million viewers in 2025.

Meanwhile, other late-night programming isn’t faring the same way. For instance, Fox News’ “Gutfeld!” is drawing in about 2.8 million viewers, significantly beating Kimmel’s numbers.

The controversy kicked off when Kimmel inaccurately referred to Tyler Robinson, the suspect in the assassination, as someone affiliated with the “Maga Gang.” He made these claims without solid backing, which only led to increased scrutiny from various corners, including the FCC. As a result, Disney decided to suspend the show after Nexstar and Sinclair discontinued airing it. Kimmel reportedly stood firm on his stance without offering an apology, which likely did him no favors.

This incident fueled protests, with calls for Disney to take more drastic action against Kimmel’s show. Thousands gathered outside the studio in Burbank, California, demanding accountability while chanting slogans against the FCC’s involvement.

After the brief hiatus, Kimmel returned to the air with a fiery monologue, but many felt he didn’t genuinely apologize for the controversy. Almost immediately, he returned to his usual routine of critiquing President Donald Trump and other conservative figures, which, I suppose, isn’t surprising for a late-night host.

However, critics have been vocal about Kimmel’s actions—or lack thereof. Supporters of Kirk have labeled Kimmel a “liar,” claiming that he has failed to take responsibility for the problematic remarks he made.

The future of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” seems uncertain as the backlash continues to ripple through the viewer base.
