Closure of Lost Continent at Universal Orlando Begins

After more than 25 years as a key part of Universal Orlando, the themed area known as Lost Continent is starting a phased shutdown at Islands of Adventure. The initial demolition processes have commenced, with local news footage showcasing excavators beside piles of debris.

A spokesperson from Universal Orlando shared that, “In the coming months, the venues and experiences within Lost Continent will be phased out and permanently closed to make way for new themed areas.” It’s worth noting that the popular Mythos Restaurant will close its doors in 2027.

Lost Continent, launched in 1999 alongside the park, played a significant role in shaping its character. The area is well-known for its mythological theme, complete with impressive stone structures and narratives drawn from ancient myths. Moreover, it has served as one of the resort’s most immersive environments, blending adventure, theatrical production, and live entertainment.

Among its once-loved attractions was the Duel Dragon roller coaster, which later transformed into Dragon Challenge following the expansion of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. This ride was celebrated for its high-stakes thrills and innovative layouts that allowed for close encounters.

Drawings of excitement also surrounded the Wrath of Poseidon, another notable attraction, known for its stunning water effects, fire jets, and live performances. Yet, over the past decade and a half, Universal has gradually dismantled parts of this area.

Back in 2010, the Duel Dragons coaster re-themed as Dragon Challenge was part of the nearby expansion linked to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. However, it ultimately shut down in 2017, giving way to Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, which has become one of the park’s standout rides.

The live show, “The 8th Voyage of Sinbad,” concluded its run in 2018, while the closure of Poseidon’s Fury is slated for 2023. Despite this gradual fading, the Mythos restaurant will continue serving guests until 2027 during the phased closure.

Universal Orlando remarked on its continued momentum, highlighting new themes and dining experiences coming soon to the resort. Another update announced that the horror makeup show at Universal Studios will temporarily close for a reimagining to introduce a mix of classic and contemporary horror elements.

Mixed feelings surface among visitors regarding the Lost Continent’s demolition. While some express relief—considering attractions have been shuttered for several years—others feel nostalgic sadness. One Reddit user mentioned they were relieved the change is finally underway, while comments on TikTok reflected sorrow, with users saying farewell to what they cherished about the Lost Continent.

Ultimately, as Universal Orlando gears up for the future, the mixed emotions surrounding Lost Continent’s closure create a poignant moment for those who experienced its magic. “Goodbye Lost Continent, you will always be my favorite show,” one user expressed, encapsulating the bittersweet sentiment felt by many.
