Stalled Peace Talks Between Russia and Ukraine
Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov, mentioned on Wednesday that discussions aimed at peace with Ukraine have come to a halt since the summit in Alaska last August. This meeting involved President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, where they aimed to lessen the tension in Eastern Europe.
Ryabkov noted that the initial momentum generated in Anchorage for a potential agreement has nearly diminished, largely due to actions from predominantly European adversaries. He expressed this sentiment during a speech at the State Duma, as reported by local news.
His remarks came amidst a troubling situation where a number of Russian drones recently intruded into NATO airspace in Romania and Poland. These border violations by the Kremlin have led to increased security fears among global leaders, raising questions about Putin’s intentions regarding the conflict in Ukraine potentially spreading into Europe.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte commented on the situation, stating that there is a strong desire to avoid further “dangerous patterns” from Russia. He echoed Trump’s earlier statements about the necessity for nations to intercept aircraft that violate their airspace.
This backdrop occurs as the White House contemplates providing Ukraine with long-range missiles, seemingly disregarding Putin’s calls to maintain restrictions outlined in the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). This move is not well-received by Russia.
Recently, Putin remarked that the U.S. sending Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine would signify a “qualitatively new stage of escalation,” impacting Russian-American relations. He further added that such actions would not alter the power dynamics during combat.
Prior to these comments, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Russia has no intentions to broaden the war in Ukraine to other regions of Europe. He emphasized that Russia has never aimed to attack Europe or NATO but warned that any aggression against Russia would prompt a strong response. He insisted that there should be no uncertainty about this among NATO and EU officials.
