Cody Bellinger heads a group of Yankees free agents with uncertain futures

In the quiet aftermath of a tough loss, Austin Wells reflected on the uncertainty surrounding many free agents. “This is probably the last time this group will meet in one room,” he remarked. “When you’ve got such strong veterans and key free agents, it’s hard to not feel a bit anxious about their future.” There’s definitely a weight to that thought.

The Yankees, having just exited the ALDS after a four-game losing streak against the Blue Jays, now face some tough choices about their roster. Notably, Cody Bellinger seems to be a pivotal figure. He’s expected to opt out of his contract’s final year but mentioned he’s willing to consider rejoining the Yankees after discussions with his family and agent Scott Boras.

“Wearing this uniform has been amazing,” Bellinger stated. “Yankee Stadium, the fans, the culture—we’ve built something special here.” It’s clear he appreciates his time there, but it feels like his future could hinge on what’s happening with Trent Grisham, another free agent who might receive a qualifying offer after just one season.

Paul Goldschmidt, another player in limbo, has aspirations for a lengthy career in MLB. “I want to keep playing, but I haven’t really planned it out yet,” he shared. “I still have a passion for the game; I guess we’ll see where it leads.” It’s a sort of hopeful uncertainty that many players might relate to.

With Devin Williams and Luke Weaver also hinting at free agency, the Yankees have important decisions to make regarding their bullpen. Williams faced struggles earlier in the season, losing his late-game role but rebounded during the playoffs, appreciating the support from the team and city.

“It was a tough adjustment at first,” said Williams, who moved from a less prominent market. “But now, I love it here—the commute to the field, the atmosphere—it’s been a great experience.” The 31-year-old expressed a willingness to return, hinting at the setup role he played alongside closer David Bednar, who remains under contract.

Williams acknowledged that a potential closer opportunity would weigh on his decision but admitted he couldn’t pinpoint what mattered most right now. “It depends on the situation,” he commented, which feels very relatable.

Among other possible free agents are Amed Rosario, Paul Blackburn, Ryan Yarbrough, and Austin Slater.
