Gaza hostage agreement pending approval from Israeli government

Hamas Hostage Situation and Gaza Conflict Update

The countdown has officially begun for the return of 48 hostages held by Hamas for over two years, coinciding with the end of the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This announcement follows a meeting of Israel’s security cabinet and government, which approved an agreement that was signed overnight.

If the agreement, developed by mediators from Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the U.S., receives government backing, Hamas is expected to release 20 living hostages and 28 deceased individuals within 72 hours, all without any formal ceremonies, as reported by the Israeli news agency TPS-IL.

The situation remains uncertain, with Hamas indicating that finding all the bodies—some allegedly buried under rubble—might prove challenging. Following governmental approval, the Israeli Defense Forces will begin to withdraw within 24 hours to designated lines agreed upon with Hamas. However, they will continue to occupy 53% of the Gaza Strip until all hostages, both alive and deceased, are returned.

Additionally, Jerusalem is likely to authorize the release of about 1,700 Gazans detained after the October 2023 attack, along with approximately 250 Palestinians serving life sentences as part of the first phase of President Donald Trump’s plan outlined last month.

It’s worth noting that the release of prisoners will not include members of Hamas’ Nukba unit or its high-ranking commanders, who are deemed key figures within the group.

Some hostages might be freed as soon as Saturday, with preparations underway to accommodate individuals who have endured severe conditions, including starvation and torture, during their captivity of 733 days.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed support for the agreement, labeling it a diplomatic achievement and a moral victory for Israel. He emphasized the role of President Trump in reaching this crucial juncture, thanking him for his unwavering commitment to both Israel’s security and the hostages’ freedom.

All surviving hostages are anticipated to be returned to Israel by Sunday, with the return of deceased individuals slated to begin the following day. A specialized plan has been crafted to aid the transition of hostages from captivity to recovery, addressing the likely complex physical and emotional conditions they may face.

The Ichilov Medical Center in Tel Aviv is already prepared to receive the hostages, ensuring they will have access to the necessary medical and psychological support in a private and comfortable environment.

The hostage recovery plan consists of five stages, leveraging insights derived from previous hostage situations. It features preparations for the victims’ reception, a required initial hospitalization period, and long-term support tailored to individual needs.

President Trump is expected to arrive in Israel on Sunday.
