Concerns Raised Over National Guard Deployment in Chicago
Chicago City Councilman Raymond Lopez, a Democrat, has expressed concerns regarding statements made by the Illinois governor and Chicago mayor, suggesting they are putting the city and the country in a precarious situation. He mentioned that the actions of certain anti-ICE activists illustrate the need for National Guard deployment.
“The politics here, particularly the ultra-progressive liberalism, are pushing us toward an escalation that none of us really want,” Lopez shared in an interview. “Governors and mayors encouraged peaceful protests, yet we saw something entirely different happen.”
He criticized the mayor and governor for what he describes as a reckless “game of chicken” when lives are at stake.
Lopez argued that the Chicago Police Department’s instruction for officers not to assist federal agents contributed to President Trump’s decision to send National Guard troops to the city, a claim that city officials deny, calling it a “predetermined conclusion.”
“If we don’t let law enforcement do their jobs, particularly with ICE, and maintain peace, it’s likely that the president will take action,” the councilman said. “We can’t let people think they can rise against the federal government without consequences.”
He emphasized the necessity for a pragmatic approach to keep the most dangerous offenders in custody and suggested collaborating with the federal government to “surgically” address the issue.
Lopez added, “In Chicago, as assaults on federal law enforcement escalate, we’re making a strong case for why we need the National Guard now more than ever.”
President Trump has federalized the Texas National Guard, working with Governor Greg Abbott, and they were deployed to Chicago recently. Abbott stated, “No Guard member can match the training and skills of the Texas National Guard. They are dedicated to protecting our country.” He also mentioned that Texas has thousands of National Guard and Air Force personnel securing the Texas-Mexico border.
In response, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson labeled the deployment as “illegal and unconstitutional,” adding, “It’s dangerous and it’s wrong.”
While the specific scope of the Texas National Guard’s mission in Chicago is still unclear, the increase in violence against Border Patrol and ICE personnel indicates a rising need for enhanced security.
