Governors clash: Abbott targets Pritzker for opposing National Guard deployment

Abbott Critiques Pritzker Over National Guard Deployment

Texas Governor Greg Abbott took a jab at Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, labeling him a “joke” for opposing the deployment of the Texas National Guard to assist with immigration enforcement in Chicago. In a conversation with FOX News Digital, Abbott stated that Pritzker is, in his view, “violating his oath of office” by resisting federal law enforcement aimed at improving safety in Chicago and other areas of Illinois.

The Pentagon confirmed that the Texas National Guard arrived in Illinois on Tuesday, with 200 troops being mobilized during the initial 60 days to protect federal personnel and property amidst protests against immigration policies.

Pritzker, who is speculated to have presidential ambitions for 2028, criticized the National Guard’s deployment, calling it a “Trump invasion” and urged Abbott to retract his support. He even threatened to exit the National Governors Association unless there was a bipartisan condemnation of the deployment.

In light of President Trump’s request for reinforcements, Abbott sent what he described as an “elite Texas National Guard,” asserting readiness to respond at any moment.

Illinois and Chicago have also initiated a federal lawsuit to block this deployment, asserting concerns regarding the legal implications.

During the interview, Abbott elaborated on his stance, asserting that Pritzker’s maneuvers breach the U.S. Constitution. “It wasn’t that long ago that he took an oath to uphold the Constitution. Instead, he’s obstructing federal officers, preventing them from performing their duties,” Abbott remarked.

He claimed that Texas troops have considerable experience with border security, which he believes makes them well-suited to support federal efforts anywhere in the country. “Texas has the largest and most trained National Guard in the nation,” he stated. “When it comes to security, it’s Texas, not the Biden administration, that’s stepped up to defend our borders.”

Pritzker characterized the deployment as an invasion, but Abbott clarified that the troops are meant to provide essential backup for federal officials operating in Illinois, where they are facing significant opposition. “They are there to ensure the safety of federal employees,” he explained, emphasizing the urgency of the situation amid rising tensions where federal law enforcement aims to operate.

He concluded with the importance of upholding federal laws, saying, “Federal employees have a duty, and any interference with that duty hinders their ability to perform.” Abbott underscored the National Guard’s training in managing civil unrest and reiterated Texas’s commitment to responding effectively in times of crisis.

Fox News Digital sought comments from Pritzker’s office but did not receive an immediate reply.
