The American Beverage Association (ABA) aims to showcase how private industries can pursue public health objectives while still offering consumers choices. This was highlighted by ABA President and CEO Kevin W. Keene in remarks made during a recent event. The dialogue, moderated by Breitbart News Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlowe, explored the beverage sector’s contributions to initiatives under President Donald Trump, particularly the “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) campaign, which focuses on innovation, transparency, and empowering consumers.
Keene mentioned that the beverage industry is collaborating with the Trump administration and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to tackle health issues through private sector innovation instead of regulation. He noted that the association has worked closely with the White House, recalling a moment when President Kennedy acknowledged their proactive stance and shared the finalized initiative before its launch. Keene emphasized the importance of responding to customer concerns and providing meaningful choices and better information.
Marlowe pointed out the growing number of zero- and low-carb options available, ranging from traditional soft drinks to flavored waters and prebiotic beverages. Keene indicated that this shift is driven by both innovation and consumer interest, mentioning that his industry has introduced at least 15 new low or no-sugar products this year. He noted that companies like Pepsi are expanding with products like prebiotic drinks, highlighting how “free markets function when we listen to consumers” to provide substantial choices while still considering public health and enjoyment.
When asked about the balance between health initiatives and personal freedom, Keene suggested that the beverage industry’s actions embody both principles. He noted that the sector plays a role in addressing health concerns like obesity and diabetes, even though its contributions represent only a small fraction of overall dietary calories. Additionally, he cautioned lawmakers to uphold free market principles while advancing health policies, emphasizing the importance of private sector initiatives to tackle health challenges effectively.
Keene further articulated how the ABA’s efforts align with the MAHA framework, illustrating how the private sector can meaningfully address real issues without government intervention. He positioned the beverage industry as an exemplary model that aligns with the MAHA mission, suggesting that it offers practical solutions rooted in listening to consumer feedback.
Earlier this year, Keene discussed the beverage industry’s status and its latest endeavor, the Transparency Initiative, launched to support the MAHA agenda by providing clear ingredient information. This initiative, available on their website, includes details on over 140 beverage ingredients and their safety ratings. He asserted the industry’s commitment to transparency, recognizing an increasing consumer demand for clear information about what they consume.
Keene and other ABA leaders are emphasizing their long-term consumer-focused strategies within the beverage landscape, in alignment with MAHA’s health and innovation priorities. In the last two decades, the beverage sector has introduced numerous sugar-free products, voluntarily removed full-calorie drinks from schools, and included calorie labeling on packages to support informed choices. Keene noted that 60% of the beverages purchased in the U.S. today contain no added sugar, attributing this shift to consumer preferences and entrepreneurial motivation.
During the recent discussion, Keene also reflected on the criticism beverage companies often encounter in health dialogues. He acknowledged that the industry’s prominence makes it a convenient target for scrutiny. Recognizing this, he stated that they need to more actively share their narratives. He maintained that their actions exemplify how market-driven solutions can address societal issues effectively, highlighting that the beverage industry is not just talk—it’s genuinely taking action.
