Political Tensions Rise in New York
Things are getting heated!
Rep. Elise Stefanik from North Country and Governor Kathy Hochul are in a bit of a tiff over recent polling data that indicates the Republican challenger is just ahead of the Democratic incumbent.
Stefanik didn’t hold back, criticizing Hochul for supposedly having a “meltdown” in response to polls suggesting voters are unhappy with her backing of socialist mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani.
“I heard that Kathy Hochul got furious with a reporter who questioned her support for communist Mamdani and tried to distance herself by embracing Joe Biden from the 2020 election,” Stefanik said, hinting at her intention to challenge Hochul in the upcoming election.
During an unrelated press conference, Hochul brushed off questions about Stefanik’s attempts to link her to Mamdani, the Democratic Socialist representative from Queens.
“I will continue to deny these outrageous claims. Supporting the election results is fundamental. It’s been the backbone of our democracy for two and a half centuries,” Hochul stated.
She expressed her disapproval of attempts to overturn election outcomes, appearing to reference the January 6 attack on the Capitol when Biden took office.
When pressed about whether it’s fair for Stefanik to connect her support for Mamdani to him, Hochul sidestepped the question.
“Honestly, I don’t care what she says,” Hochul responded bluntly.
A poll conducted by Stefanik’s polling firm revealed that she is trailing Hochul by only five points in a potential statewide matchup.
In contrast, Hochul’s response to Stefanik’s “meltdown” comments came through a spokesperson who redirected to her initial remarks.
Another poll from the Siena Institute showed a starkly different scenario for possible challengers against Hochul. An August poll indicated that Stefanik was behind by 14 points, and another in September reported a 25-point difference.
Notably, both Siena polls were taken before Hochul officially endorsed Mamdani last month.
Meanwhile, some Republican officials claim that internal polling indicates significant voter discontent with Mamdani’s socialist policies, suggesting that Hochul’s support is declining in suburban areas like Nassau County.
