Charges Laid Against Pro-Palestinian Protesters in Boston

Pro-Palestinian protesters involved in the recent unrest in Boston are now facing charges related to “promoting anarchy” after several police officers sustained injuries during the disturbance.

The Suffolk District Attorney’s Office announced on Thursday that charges against all 13 individuals involved in the incident have been upgraded. Court documents reveal these suspects allegedly violated a state law that defines “promotion of anarchy” as a felony.

Up to 300 people participated in a pro-Palestinian rally in downtown Boston on Tuesday evening, which quickly escalated into violence. Police reported that demonstrators became aggressive toward law enforcement, leading to the arrest of 13 individuals.

A spokesperson for the District Attorney’s Office commented that the charges were prompted by an examination of promotional materials connected to the protest, including posters that featured quotes from Hamas representatives and images of a burning police vehicle.

Police described one poster as saying, “Peace be with the souls that will one day soar in the skies of al-Quid and al-Aqsa, cleansed of the filth of the murderers and liberated.”

This led law enforcement to believe the group intended to assemble and march in a way likely to instill fear, cause destruction, and promote disorder.

During the riot, four officers were injured, with reports indicating that rioters had kicked in car doors and actively resisted dispersal. As tensions rose, additional police were deployed to the scene as protesters continued their violent actions.

Officers also reported that equipment was forcibly removed or damaged, including body cameras and radios.

Charges against the arrested included unlawful assembly, violent resistance, obstructing emergency response efforts, and assault.

The individuals arrested included several young adults, with bail amounts ranging from $500 to $10,000. Notably, three suspects had bail set at $10,000 due to the severity of their actions, including one who allegedly struck an officer to facilitate another suspect’s escape.

In a statement, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden conveyed a clear message to future demonstrators: protest peacefully or face prosecution. He emphasized that the defendants were not in court due to their right to protest, but rather for committing crimes during the event.

Previous protests had been organized by local Justice for Palestine groups to mark the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack perpetrated by Hamas. The aim was to create a significant presence downtown in support of Palestine.

Witnesses reported that some of the protesters shouted derogatory phrases toward police as tensions escalated.
