Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to Venezuelan Opposition Leader
The Nobel Committee announced on Friday morning that Maria Colina Machado, a prominent figure in the Venezuelan opposition, has been awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
This decision highlights Venezuela, even as discussions around U.S. President Donald Trump intensified regarding his chances for the prestigious award, largely due to his ongoing efforts to mediate peace amid global conflicts.
Reports indicate that Trump previously expressed that not being awarded the prize would be an “insult” to the United States, suggesting support for his peace initiatives from multiple nations.
In their announcement, the committee remarked, “She will receive the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her tireless efforts to advance the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.” Machado is celebrated as the 2025 laureate.
Machado stood as one of 338 nominees for this notable award, including 244 individuals and 94 organizations. The 58-year-old industrial engineer has been in hiding since August 2024, driven by concerns for her safety following intimidation from supporters of President Nicolas Maduro’s regime.
Despite these threats, she remained resolute in her decision not to flee the country, even as Maduro’s government threatened to arrest her.
The Nobel Peace Prize, valued at 11 million Swedish crowns (around $1.2 million), is set to be awarded in Oslo on December 10, coinciding with the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, who established the prize in his will in 1895.
Interestingly, President Trump was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 by Swedish lawmaker Magnus Jakobsson, acknowledging his mediation efforts in conflicts between Kosovo and Serbia, as well as his role in normalizing relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
Friday’s announcement occurred just a day after Trump negotiated a deal that Israeli officials described as “miraculous,” as it effectively ended the war in Gaza and successfully freed all remaining hostages. This achievement has been referred to as historic, with allies dubbing Trump the “president of peace” and the “peacemaker the world needed.”
