Paul Pierce was arrested on Tuesday, suspected of drowsy driving. The 47-year-old was reportedly caught with his eyes shut.
In a message he shared, Pierce included a photo of the traffic jam but didn’t clarify if he had been under the influence.
“Imagine being stuck in traffic for 45 minutes and falling asleep 🤦🏾♂️ I took this photo because it was the first time I’d been stopped for that long,” he wrote in a thread. “I’m old, I’m tired, I fell asleep 🤷🏾♂️ Thanks for all the love; I’m okay.”
Authorities arrested Pierce late Tuesday night after discovering him asleep in his SUV on Highway 101 around 10:30 p.m. The California Highway Patrol reported the incident.
Officers were investigating a multi-vehicle wreck that had caused lane closures when they noticed the stationary Range Rover
Pierce was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence, and his situation will be handled by the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office.
He was later extracted from the vehicle and released.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers observed Pierce appearing drowsy at the wheel. They detected signs of potential alcohol impairment, leading to a DUI investigation.
Pierce, who is in the Basketball Hall of Fame, had a 19-season NBA career, mainly with the Celtics from 1998 to 2013 before a trade to the Nets.
The Nets, featuring Pierce alongside Kevin Garnett, Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, and Brook Lopez, are often seen as one of the league’s failures, having been eliminated in the second round of the playoffs.
Following his time with the Nets, Pierce played for the Wizards and concluded his career with the Clippers.
He previously hosted FS1’s “Speak” before its cancellation last July.
