8 Ukrainian Children Reunited with Their Families After Talks with Putin

Melania Trump Announces Reunification of Ukrainian Children

In a significant development, First Lady Melania Trump has revealed that eight Ukrainian children, who had been held in Russia, have been reunited with their families. This progress reportedly came after months of direct communication with President Vladimir Putin, which began with a letter she sent in August.

During a rare solo address to the press on Friday, Mrs. Trump expressed that “a lot has become clear” since her initial outreach. She mentioned that both leaders had appealed to President Putin regarding the welfare of these children and highlighted ongoing dialogues related to their situation.

“He responded in writing, indicating his willingness to engage directly with me about the Ukrainian children in Russia,” she said. They have maintained open communication channels over the last few months, involving various backchannel discussions focused on the children’s welfare.

Then, she shared the positive news that eight children had been “reunited with their families” recently.

According to Ukraine’s official “bring back the children” initiative, approximately 20,000 reports of “illegal deportation and forced removal” of children have emerged since the Russian invasion began in 2022; of those, around 1,600 have been returned to their families.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Putin, citing ‘war crimes’ related to children held in his country. Meanwhile, the Yale School of Public Health Humanitarian Lab reported that many children have been moved to over 200 locations in Russia, with some being adopted by Russian families and forced into “re-education” programs, while older kids receive military training.

“Each of our children has lived in turmoil because of the war in Ukraine,” Melania Trump remarked, detailing the circumstances of the eight reunited children. Three were separated from their parents due to conflict, while five were displaced across the border, including a girl who has now returned from Russia to Ukraine. She noted that she has learned a significant amount about the situation over the past few months.

Furthermore, she indicated that Russia had shown a willingness to provide substantial information regarding each child’s situation, including biographical data, photographs, and medical records, all verified by U.S. and Ukrainian officials.

Mrs. Trump emphasized her commitment to bringing more affected children home, including those who recently turned 18, stating that plans are already in motion for future reunifications.

“I hope peace comes soon. It starts with our children. Thank you,” she concluded.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude for Melania Trump’s efforts in bringing attention to the issue, commenting that her voice and concern strengthen the cause.
