Hegseth Reveals US Will Open Qatari Air Force Base in Idaho

New Qatar Air Force Facility to Open in Idaho

The U.S. plans to establish a Qatar Air Force facility at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho, as announced by Army Secretary Pete Hegseth during a meeting with Qatar’s Deputy Defense Minister on Friday.

This facility will accommodate Qatari pilots and their aircraft. Hegseth, speaking at a joint press conference with Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Defense Minister, highlighted that the base has previously been used for training with various foreign militaries, including the Singapore Air Force.

“We’ll have a contingent of Qatari F-15s and pilots here, which will improve our joint training effectiveness and operational capabilities,” Hegseth explained. He expressed hope for strengthened trust between the nations.

In his remarks, Hegseth noted Qatar’s influential role in facilitating the recent Hamas ceasefire. However, it remains unclear if the establishment of this air force facility depended on the ceasefire’s success.

Recently, President Trump reaffirmed NATO-like security assurances for Qatar, labeling any aggression towards the nation as a “threat to the peace and security of the United States.”

Critics have raised concerns over Qatar’s increasing influence in the U.S. over the past decade, especially as former officials engage in roles serving Qatari interests. Trump’s acceptance of a private jet offer in May generated significant debate among both liberals and conservatives.

The Pentagon has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the announcement.
