John Lodge, Iconic Musician from The Moody Blues, Passes Away at 82
John Lodge, the renowned singer and bassist who was a key figure in The Moody Blues’ landmark 1967 album Days of Future Passed, passed away unexpectedly on Friday at the age of 82, as confirmed by his family.
The family shared that he “passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones and the music of the Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly.” His official Facebook page described him as a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.
With heavy hearts, his family stated, “It is with the deepest sadness that we announce that our beloved husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, and brother, John Lodge, was suddenly and unexpectedly taken from us.”
Lodge joined The Moody Blues in 1966 alongside guitarist and vocalist Justin Hayward, following the departures of Denny Laine and Clint Warwick. Together, they turned the band into a symphonic psychedelic powerhouse. Lodge played a critical role as the lead writer, vocalist, and bassist on Days of Future Passed, hailed as one of the first concept albums in rock music, along with its subsequent release, In Search of the Lost Chord.
Although the band stopped touring in 2018, the same year they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Lodge continued to make music and perform solo, reinventing classic tracks from the group as he approached his 80s.
The exact cause of his death remains unknown. Concluding their statement, the family referenced Lodge’s signature greeting from the stage: “Thank you for keeping your faith,” a nod to his song “Whispering Angels.”
News of Lodge’s passing spread rapidly on social media, with fans and fellow musicians honoring his memorable bass lines and captivating vocals in beloved tracks like “Nights in White Satin,” “Ride My Seesaw,” and “I’m Just a Singer (In a Rock ‘n’ Roll Band).” In more recent years, Lodge had pursued a solo career, engaged in an archival project connected to Days of Future Passed, and maintained an active touring schedule even after the band’s live performances concluded.
