Tarik Skubal shares interesting thoughts on his future amid trade rumors following the Tigers' ALDS elimination.

Tarik Skubal’s Future with the Tigers in Question

The recent Game 5 loss in the ALDS to the Mariners, which ended in a nail-biting 3-2 defeat during the 15th inning, has stirred conversations about the future of the Tigers’ leading pitcher, Tarik Skubal. Detroit couldn’t hold onto a one-run lead and faced a tough exit, especially after Skubal was ejected in the 6th inning. With just one year left on his contract, his position seems to be at a crossroads.

When asked whether he would discuss the team’s direction and his own future, Skubal noted, “My job is to play. Those questions should be asked of the front office.” This perspective certainly puts a spotlight on the decisions that lie ahead for Detroit’s management.

Following this defeat, observers from across the league, including general managers from other teams, are likely reaching out to find out if Skubal could be available this offseason. The speculation is that if he doesn’t secure an extension with the Tigers, a trade might be in the cards, potentially granting more in terms of draft compensation than what he might bring in free agency.

Turning 29 next month, Skubal is regarded as one of the best pitchers in baseball. There’s a bit of a trend with his agent, Scott Boras, whose clients often head toward free agency instead of agreeing to extensions. It’s a tactic that tends to raise eyebrows, as teams consider their options for retaining talent.

In earlier discussions about a contract, it seems the Tigers weren’t very high on Skubal. Meanwhile, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winners are shaping up to have one of the most lucrative payrolls in MLB history, averaging significant annual values for their recent signings, excluding stars like Shohei Ohtani.

On the financial front, the Tigers began the 2025 season with a payroll of $143.2 million, placing them 17th in MLB. Scott Harris, the team’s President of Baseball Operations, has previously downplayed notions of a championship “window.” He expressed, “I don’t look at this as a window. My focus is getting to the postseason each year.”

As for Skubal, if his performance on Friday night was his swan song with Detroit, he went out in style. He recorded a staggering 13 strikeouts and allowed only one run over six innings, departing with a 2-1 lead, though ultimately the Tigers couldn’t hold onto it.

Despite Skubal’s impressive stats—22 strikeouts in 13 innings and a 2.08 ERA—his two starts in the ALDS ended in losses, contributing to a tumultuous season finale for the Tigers. Yet, if he remains in Detroit, he hasn’t shied away from his expectations. Skubal asserted, “I think the World Series should be the standard for everyone in this organization.”
