Abbott deploys emergency resources in response to increasing wildfire threats and flood risks in Texas

Governor Greg Abbott is set to enhance the state’s emergency response efforts, particularly as Texas braces for increased wildfire risks and potential flooding this weekend.

According to a statement from Abbott’s office, he has updated Texas’ wildfire disaster declaration, now covering 179 counties.

“The threat from elevated wildfire conditions and flooding persists across Texas,” Abbott remarked. “Today, I instructed the Texas Emergency Management Agency to send additional personnel to prepare for possible wildfires in the eastern part of the state and severe flooding in West Texas.”

He emphasized that Texas stays alert and is committed to deploying all necessary resources to protect residents from the threats of wildfire and flooding.

The Texas A&M Forest Service (TAMFS) cited an uptick in wildfire danger linked to drier conditions in East Texas, stronger winds, and higher-than-usual temperatures. Consequently, the wildland fire preparedness level has been raised to Level 3. The governor’s office advises Texans to avoid activities that might spark fires.

TAMFS has enhanced its resources by adding over 350 firefighters and support staff from both in-state and out-of-state. Additionally, the service is equipped with more than 125 pieces of machinery, such as fire engines and bulldozers, ready for action.

The governor’s office reported that the National Weather Service predicts heavy rainfall stemming from an eastern Pacific storm, which could extend into far west Texas, increasing the risk of flash flooding.

“Texans should keep a close eye on the forecasts and heed the guidance of emergency officials,” the governor’s office advised.

The Swiftwater Rescue Boat Unit is prepared for flood rescues, as stated in the release.

The governor’s office recommends that Texans be proactive by drafting emergency plans and assembling supply kits while following the direction of emergency response officials.
