Eric Decker Returns to Minneapolis for Homecoming Game

Eric Decker is making his way back to Minneapolis for a homecoming game with the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday night, reliving some fond memories from his playing days.

The former NFL receiver shone brightly during his time at Minnesota, showcasing his skills in the Metrodome for three years before finishing his college career at Huntington Bank Stadium. It’s clear he has a deep affection for the university.

“Being back here, surrounded by all that excitement… I really appreciate what PJ Fleck has done for the program. He’s brought out the best in everyone involved. Autumn is perfect for this, and football season brings back a multitude of wonderful memories from my own career,” Decker remarked in a recent interview.

As part of the festivities, Decker will be stepping in for Duke Cannon, introducing a “Big A-Soap Barrel” to help fans freshen up during the long day of tailgating before the evening’s kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET. “It’s a chance for fans to quickly clean up so they’ll feel their best walking into the stadium,” he explained. “It’s a creative touch, and I’m excited to partake in this unique aspect of the college experience during my visit.”

More than ten years have passed since Decker wore the Gophers’ colors, and he’s watched the landscape of college athletics transform since then.

He acknowledges that Minnesota faces an uphill battle to compete with traditional Big Ten powerhouses such as Ohio State and Michigan State, as well as rising contenders like Oregon State and Washington State. “We have talented players, but keeping them is tricky,” he noted.

What’s the solution? “It’s about opportunity, but it’s also a challenge. Minneapolis boasts many Fortune 500 companies, and the absence of substantial funding—a contrast to schools like Ohio State—is certainly a hurdle. We need to find a way to connect these businesses to the program’s vision. Financially, it’s feasible, and I hope to see some significant support in the future,” Decker said.

“Honestly, it feels like change is crucial, or progress may be limited without tangible financial backing.”

This Saturday, Minnesota aims for its fourth win of the season against Purdue.
