Trump Celebrates Hostage Release in Israel
President Donald Trump expressed optimism about a “new beginning” in the Middle East during his visit to Israel, coinciding with the release of 20 Israeli hostages by Hamas.
Arriving early on Monday, Trump noted the timing aligned with an agreement that also saw Israel start releasing around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, some of whom were labeled as terrorists. In a heartfelt message in the guestbook, he wrote, “This is my great honor. A wonderful and beautiful day. A new beginning.”
As the day unfolded, hostages returned home, a development following the violent events triggered by a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Trump later met with families of the freed hostages and received standing ovations from Israeli lawmakers in anticipation of his speech.
In his forthcoming address to Congress, Trump plans to herald this moment as a “historic dawn for a new Middle East” and suggest that this could be a pivotal point, remembered for generations. He will assert that Israel has achieved all it can through force and that now is the time to convert military victories into lasting peace.
Trump’s speech will also include an olive branch towards Iran, stating that “the arms of friendship and cooperation are always open,” considering recent tensions following a brief conflict earlier in the year.
Following his Israel visit, Trump will travel to Egypt for a summit in Sharm el-Sheikh with President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and leaders from over 20 countries, focused on peace efforts in Gaza and the broader region.
