President Donald Trump expressed on Monday that Secretary of State Marco Rubio might go down in history as the best to ever hold that position.
Following a recent peace agreement between Israel and Hamas, which the Trump administration facilitated, Trump commended Rubio during a speech in the Knesset. This agreement is part of a series of eight significant conflicts the administration has addressed since taking office, with the negotiations involving Hamas being the most pivotal.
“I predict that Marco will be remembered as the greatest Secretary of State in U.S. history,” Trump said, adding his name to the accolade.
Rubio, seated between Army Secretary Pete Hegseth and the president’s chief of staff Susie Wiles, reacted with a smile and laughter.
Trump reminisced about their rivalry during the 2016 presidential primary, highlighting how far they’ve come since then.
“You know, we really went at it. He was fierce, he was tough. Can you believe this, Marco?” Trump remarked, eliciting laughter from Rubio. “And now I’m saying he’s going to be remembered as a great figure.”
“People admire him for his intelligence and sharpness,” he noted.
During a recent roundtable with independent journalists at the White House, Rubio presented Trump with a memo stressing that a deal is very near.
“We’re very close. Your Truth Social post needs to be approved right away so you can break the news,” the memo stated, as shared by Evan Vucci, AP’s Washington chief photographer.
Before finalizing the Israel-Hamas agreement, Trump and Rubio had already negotiated several ceasefires and peace accords globally. They are said to have addressed conflicts between countries like India and Pakistan, Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as issues involving Egypt and Ethiopia, and prevented escalations between Serbia and Kosovo.
