Witkoff and Kushner's face-to-face conversation with Hamas contributed to achieving a significant peace agreement: sources

Historic Peace Deal Ends Gaza Conflict

WASHINGTON – A significant step was taken by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, when they decided to meet directly with Hamas during recent ceasefire discussions. This face-to-face meeting was a crucial factor in reaching a peace agreement that concluded the Gaza war, as reported by officials.

Shortly after arriving in Egypt, Witkoff and Kushner played a pivotal role in resolving outstanding issues that had been hindering Hamas from endorsing a U.S.-mediated peace deal. This agreement not only ended the violent conflict but also facilitated the return of Israeli hostages taken during Hamas’ aggressive actions in southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

A source familiar with the negotiations commented that they believed meeting in person could foster bonding among all involved parties. This meeting, they noted, wasn’t something that happened overnight; it had been a long time coming.

Additionally, the duo’s negotiation skills with Qatar proved beneficial, a process backed by the U.S., Türkiye, and Egypt.

The source indicated, “We turned to the Qatari prime minister and his team to help bridge the gap between both sides.” They added that there seems to be a level of trust toward Kushner and Witkoff among the Qataris.

Axios was the first to report on the envoy’s meeting with Hamas.

In a recent interview, Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sheren Haskel highlighted how crucial the two men were in getting Qatar to join the negotiations, emphasizing it as a key element leading to success.

“The pressure on Hamas comes from the influence of Qatar and Türkiye,” she explained. “Hamas leaders, after all, have substantial financial resources and luxury lifestyles in those countries.”

“Qatar and Turkey could easily apply pressure on Hamas, especially given their rapport with President Trump,” she added. Engaging in open discussions was likely critical in building this pressure.

Mr. Witkoff and Mr. Kushner will continue to be involved as the next phases of the ceasefire are developed.

Expressing his sentiments on social media, Witkoff remarked, “I never thought this day would come. I am thrilled that so many families can finally expect to get their loved ones back.” He acknowledged that, “Today, 20 families will be spared the pain of uncertainty regarding their loved ones.”
