Mamdani, a candidate for mayor in NYC, speaks about Israeli hostages following criticism.

New York City’s socialist mayoral candidate, Zoran Mamdani, recently responded to criticism for his silence following the release of Israeli hostages from Gaza. On Monday afternoon, he shared his thoughts, describing the situation as deeply moving for both Israelis and Palestinians. Families are reconnecting after enduring years of fear, which he noted was significant in light of the current ceasefire.

Mamdani termed the developments a “beacon of hope,” suggesting that reconstruction could finally commence. He expressed that the news likely provides comfort to many New Yorkers who have been affected by the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the moral implications of U.S. funding for activities he views as wrong. He called for accountability and a more profound reflection on collective values and government policies.

His lengthy statement avoided mentioning President Trump, who has been involved in the negotiations, yet he reiterated that the obligation to pursue peace now lies with everyone committed to it. He asserted that after urgent needs are addressed, it’s crucial to focus on creating a just and secure future for all.

This statement came hours after Andrew Cuomo, a former New York governor and one of Mamdani’s opponents, publicly criticized his delayed response to the hostages’ release. Cuomo pointed out Mamdani’s lack of condemnation regarding inflammatory statements tied to anti-Semitism, suggesting that his silence was telling.

While Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa voiced support for the hostages’ release early that morning, Sliwa was the only one to commend Trump directly.

Earlier, Mamdani had hinted at potentially acknowledging Trump’s role, stating that if hostages were returned and violence stopped, it could be considered commendable. His post was met with backlash, including from Representative Inna Vernikov, who noted the absence of any reference to Hamas or the terror they enacted on October 7.

Mamdani had also spent the previous night fundraising for a UN group linked to the terrorists involved in the incident right before the hostages’ release, which added to the criticism directed at him.

In a related development, Trump celebrated what he called a historic peace agreement in the region, proclaiming a new era of peace in the Middle East during a recent speech. He remarked that this moment was long awaited and filled with hope for many.

Fox News Digital sought a response from Mamdani’s campaign but had not received any feedback at the time of this report.
