Iowa guard Tavion Banks taken into custody for supposed involvement in a drunken bar altercation

Taveon Banks, a guard for the Iowa Hawkeyes, was arrested early Sunday after an incident at a brewery in Iowa City that required police involvement.

He faces charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct related to this incident.

The altercation reportedly took place around 1:15 a.m., with Banks disputing with the staff at Reunion Brewery. Authorities noted that he appeared intoxicated, exhibiting bloodshot eyes and a smell of alcohol, as detailed in a police report.

Banks declined to take a breathalyzer test, according to the documentation.

Details beyond this encounter remain scarce.

The University of Iowa Athletics Department released a statement acknowledging the situation, stating that they are aware of the charges against Banks. They also mentioned that he must adhere to the university’s protocols concerning the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct and the men’s basketball program’s regulations.

Banks, a senior, moved to Iowa after head coach Ben McCollum transitioned from Drake to the Hawkeyes. Last season, he had a commendable performance at Drake, averaging 10.1 points per game and earning the Missouri Valley Conference Sixth Man of the Year award.

During his time at Drake, the team achieved a 31-4 record and managed to beat No. 6 Missouri in the NCAA Tournament’s first round, where Banks scored 15 points.

Before his stint at Drake, he started at Northwest Florida State University, a junior college, before transferring to Drake for his junior year—the only season he played for that program prior to joining Iowa.

Banks was among six players who followed Coach McCollum from Drake to Iowa. The men’s basketball season for Iowa State kicks off on November 4 against Robert Morris.
