Kylie Jenner's King Kylie cosmetics advertisement featuring jail imagery splits fan opinions

Kylie Jenner’s Controversial Promo Sparks Divided Opinions

Kylie Jenner’s recent advertisement for her new King Kylie Cosmetics collection has stirred quite a debate among fans. Some have called her approach “totally outrageous.”

On Sunday, the 28-year-old reality star shared a brief video on Instagram that features her in handcuffs, strutting down a prison corridor with two police officers nearby. Dressed in a black leather bra and matching micro shorts, she completed the look with fishnet stockings, chunky silver jewelry, and black pumps.

Her long black hair was styled in loose curls streaked with teal, reminiscent of her bold looks from her earlier “King Kylie” phase. The video concluded dramatically with a woman whispering “King Kylie” as the screen transitioned to black, showcasing the message “King Kylie. Tomorrow.”

This collection harkens back to the rebellious persona she embraced in the mid-2010s, which was crucial in establishing her brand identity. It aligns with the origins of Kylie Cosmetics, the beauty empire she launched in 2015.

After sharing the teaser, Jenner’s followers, along with some celebrity friends, flooded the comments to express their excitement. Hailey Bieber chimed in with “Exactly,” while Lauren Sanchez Bezos added a raised hand emoji. One fan exclaimed, “KING KYLIE IS BACK!” while another simply stated, “I’m back.”

However, the promotional content didn’t sit well with some critics online, especially in a Reddit thread. They expressed outrage, pointing to the timing amid ongoing discussions about ICE raids and immigration enforcement policies.

One Reddit user sharply stated, “The country is boiling over, its people are being dragged away by badge-hungry villain rent-a-cops, and Kylie Jenner cancels her handcuffed hotpants photo shoot to promote a cosmetics product. This is not satire, it’s American corruption.” Others echoed similar sentiments, suggesting she was “out of touch.”

Another critic expressed dismay at Jenner’s seemingly cavalier attitude towards the serious issues being represented. They noted that this kind of portrayal feels deeply inappropriate considering current events.

Some users criticized Jenner for reviving the “King Kylie” brand, drawing parallels to recent protests against perceived authoritarianism. One commenter pointed out the oddity of launching this promotion coinciding with “No Kings” protests occurring across the nation.

This backlash isn’t the first for a Jenner, as many are recalling her sister Kendall’s infamous Pepsi ad from 2017, where she tried to portray peace-making at a protest by offering a can of soda to a police officer. The campaign was quickly panned as tone-deaf, leading Pepsi to retract the ad and issue an apology within two days.

Fans were quick to voice their disappointment over the Pepsi commercial, and Kendall later expressed feeling “so stupid” during an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

Given the controversy, one Reddit user mused if Kylie was attempting to recreate that same level of outrage with her current campaign. As the discussion unfolds, Jenner has yet to publicly address the criticism surrounding her promotion.

Though she hasn’t provided any comments on the matter, various media outlets have reached out to her representatives. The debate continues as fans and critics alike weigh in on the implications of her choices.
