Glenn Stands by Fields Despite Struggles
Aaron Glenn openly discussed Justin Fields’ performance on Monday, admitting that the quarterback did not perform well in the loss to the Broncos on Sunday.
However, the Jets’ rookie head coach is not quick to bench Fields after just one disappointing game, even if it was notably poor. “Looking back on what Justin has done in previous games, I wouldn’t say he was bad at all. In fact, I think he performed well in those four outings,” Glenn remarked. “Sure, he stepped back in Game 5. I see that, and I’m with you all on it, but we can’t just make a decision based on one game. We need to focus on improving, and he understands that better than anyone.”
In the game against the Broncos, Fields completed only 9 of 17 passes for a mere 45 yards, contributing to the team’s -10 net passing yards—a record low for the franchise.
Despite having a reliable backup in Tyrod Taylor, Glenn decided not to make a switch. He felt that doing so might create an unhealthy situation where quarterbacks would be constantly worried about being benched if they struggled. “I think that would create a mindset where they’re just worried about getting pulled if things don’t go well,” he said.
Glenn also highlighted that other players share the blame for the offensive issues. He mentioned that the team needs to improve their blocking and that the receivers need to find ways to get open more effectively.
He emphasized that Fields must learn to release the ball more quickly, pointing out that the offensive line, including center Josh Myers, needs to do a better job protecting him. Myers, who has worked closely with Fields, expressed confidence in his future performances, noting, “He’s a great player and a strong leader. We need to give him the time to make the right reads. He’ll come back strong.”
As the Jets find themselves at 0-6, they are the only winless team in the league, and the frustration among fans is palpable. Glenn, however, maintains an optimistic outlook, saying, “Of course, everyone wants a winning record, but our focus is on building a strong foundation for future success. We need to keep improving, and I think our last game showed the potential for that. It doesn’t guarantee we’ll win every game, but it does give us a fighting chance.”
